The deepest level of worship is praising God in spite of pain, thanking God during trial, trusting Him when tempted, surrendering while suffering, and loving Him when He seems distant.          – Rick Warren

2:11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, they came each one from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and comfort him.

1) Sometimes it doesn’t make sense when bad things happen.

Job 3:1-3 & 26     Afterward Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. 2 And Job said, 3  “Let the day perish on which I was to be born, And the night which said, ‘A boy is conceived.’

26 “I am not at ease, nor am I quiet, And I am not at rest, but turmoil comes.”

2) Some people kick you when your down even if they are trying to help.

Eliphaz – (the eldest it seems) In my experience… people only have hard times because of their sin. If you repent life will be good again. If I were you, I would try praying.

Job – My punishment and sin are not in balance! It isn’t fair! Teach me my sin and I will listen. I don’t know why God is allowing this but it is not my sin. When I pray God is silent!

Bildad – (tradition) Be quiet. You know you have sinned. look back at tradition. Don’t you know how big God is! Our history shows us that God punishes the wicked and rewards the righteous. Everything in nature is cause and effect. Your children died because they sinned. God doesn’t allow bad things to happen to good people! So cheer up!

Job – I know how big God is! How can I even approach God to question him. We have no mediator! I can’t change God’s mind! What good would it do to pretend to be happy? God, Why is this happening?

Zophar – (Assumption) You are a guilty, ignorant, and sinful windbag! This is of God! If you would just surrender your moral defect to God things would be good.

Job – Okay that’s enough. Truly you guys are so wise! This is of God. He is in charge of everything. (I bow to God alone, and I am not sure you have ever met Him) You’re worthless physicians! You attack me, but I know my Redeemer Lives!

Eliphaz (22) You ignore the poor, fail to feed the hungry, don’t take car of the widow. No wonder God is punishing you.

Job 26:2-4
2 “What a help you are to the weak!
How you have saved the arm without strength! 3  “What counsel you have given to one without wisdom! What helpful insight you have abundantly provided! 4 “To whom have you uttered words? And whose spirit was expressed through you?

Job – I have fed the hungry, cared for the widow, provided for the poor, even made a covenant with my eyes not to look at women in lust, and comforted those who mourn. God is against me! No one can understand God’s wisdom or power but this can’t be right! I don’t understand!

3) What you do in your pain matters.

Elihu: Job, humble yourself because God rejects the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

– Don’t be surprised!

 1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you;

– Jesus suffered unfairly so we are not above it

2 Corinthians 5:21  He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Jesus understands what you are going through.

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

Jesus is praying for you.

1 Timothy 2:5  For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus
